A practical Driving Lessons can be extremely intimidating. If you’ve never driven before, the task can seem tremendously more insurmountable. Rather than falling victim to anxiety and letting the task feel impossible, there are a few things you can do to make the practical driving test a lot easier on your body and your mind.
Drive and Drive Often
It’s often said that the only way to deal with your fear is to confront it head-on. If you’re afraid of driving, don’t avoid it. Instead, be sure to drive as much as you can in your spare time before the test. Obviously, if you don’t have a license, you can drive with someone that does have one in order to learn how to operate a vehicle properly. This will allow you to familiarize yourself with how a given vehicle will perform, and you can anticipate its speed and maneuverability prior to the test itself.
It’s also a good idea to drive with the same vehicle that you’re going to use for the actual practical Driving Lesson. Driving with the same vehicle you’ll use on the test will make it all the easier.
Take the Lesson Before You Take the Test
This advice may sound confusing, but it’s really quite simple. Most practical driving Lessons are public knowledge. This means that you could ask virtually anyone and they could tell you exactly what’s going to be on the test before you take it. Instead of going into the test without any prior experience, find out what’s going to be on the test, and then try and replicate it in your spare time.
For example, if you know there are going to be three-point turns and a pull into a parking spot on the Lesson, then do the three-point turns and parking spot pull-ins during your spare time. That will allow you as a test-taker to prepare adequately, and it will allow you to focus less on being unsure and nervous, and more on simply executing exactly what you practiced. Think of it more as a rehearsal than anything else.
Relax and Take it Easy
Remember, a practical driving test isn’t the end-all, be-all. Be positive and expect to pass, and if you don’t, don’t worry about it; it’s no big deal. You can always retake a test if you have to. The primary goal of the test should be to do your best and let the chips fall where they may.
